Cultural Analytics - Moana

Introduction

For this assignment, I chose to do one of my favorite movies, the Disney movie "Moana". Every girl growing up has a Disney princess that she connects with most. Growing up I never truly felt I had a princess I resonated with most, but I would say Ariel because of my love for water and Jasmine because I am from Pakistan and culturally she and I are somewhat similar. That was until the release of Moana. Moana not only looks like me, but although we are not ethnically the same, we share similar characteristics personality-wise and of course our love for the water.

I will never forget being in my high school cafeteria eating lunch with my neighbor who I was also friends, watching the scene of baby Moana meeting water for the first time. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before visually, and from that moment I was obsessed. For this assignment, this scene from this movie came to mind.

The Process

It took me a while to figure out how to use the frame extractor website. I originally copied and pasted the URL from YouTube of the scene. I read that it would take longer than if I used FFMPEG so I let it sit. Every few minutes I would check in and mess around with it, but get no results so I thought the website was broken. I decided to try with a video I already had on my laptop which worked, so I realized I needed to screen record the scene from YouTube and upload it onto the website since YouTube did not allow me to download the scene. I was scared I was not going to be able to screen record because it was Disney, but luckily had no issues.

I originally took 20 frames and put them into the IMJ website. I ran into there because I was unable to get a barcode, but it was because I had the plot setting on. I then took 200 frames 75 apart. My results were much more adequate but not very different.

Analysis

Disney's "Moana" is an animated film that effectively conveys complex emotions and narratives through visual storytelling. The scene where Moana first encounters the ocean is a pivotal moment filled with awe and discovery. The barcode analysis of the scene revealed a spectrum of shades of deep blues and turquoise, capturing the essence of the ocean in its various forms. These colors symbolize vastness, freedom, and the unknown, reflecting Moana's yearning for exploration and adventure. The turquoise hues suggest a mystical and spiritual connection with the ocean, hinting at its role as a guiding force in Moana's journey.

Moana and the Ocean

The contrast between the sand and the ocean in the scene is a powerful visual element that enhances the emotional depth of the scene. The sand's warm golden tones contrast with the vibrant blues and turquoise of the ocean, symbolizing the juxtaposition of stability and movement, tradition and exploration. The sand, often depicted in soft, textured layers, grounds the scene in a tactile and familiar setting, emphasizing Moana's connection to her island home and her community's reliance on the sea for sustenance and livelihood. It serves as a visual anchor amidst the vastness of the ocean, reinforcing the contrast between the known and the unknown, the familiar and the adventurous.

The interaction between Moana and the sand underscores her internal conflict and sense of duty, as she stands at the water's edge, torn between her responsibilities to her people and her curiosity about the ocean. This contrast enriches the visual storytelling and deepens the thematic layers of the film, reflecting themes such as courage, identity, and the pursuit of one's destiny.

The barcode analysis also highlighted the meticulous craftsmanship in animation, with each frame depicting intricate textures and subtle variations in lighting. A visual storytelling technique is used to contrast the stability and tradition of Moana's island life with the transformative power of the ocean. This accentuates the dynamic nature of the ocean and adds depth to the scene. The contrast highlights Moana's internal conflict and growth, as well as themes of courage, exploration, and identity quest. Disney's animators use color and visual composition to convey depth and emotional resonance, enhancing the film's storytelling impact. The contrast between the sand and water scenes is not just a spectacle but a deliberate narrative device, immersing audiences in Moana's journey of self-discovery and connection to the natural world.

The coherence and consistency in visual style throughout "Moana" are underscored by the uniformity in color palette and the attention to detail in animation techniques. This visual continuity reinforces the film's narrative cohesion and enhances Moana's evolving relationship with the ocean as a character with its own personality and significance throughout the movie.
